  • Throughout the cowl, on both sides, there is an i-cord. Instructions on how to do this are included in the written pattern, but not in the chart.

Cable Cast On (for buttonholes)

You can cast on as you like in the beginning; for the buttonholes I suggest the Cable

Cast On: knit one stitch inserting the tip of the right needle between the two last stitches

of the left needle; put the new stitch back on the left needle; repeat until you have the

necessary number of stitches.

Directions

Cast on 46 sts.

Row 1 (RS):  p3, k to the last 3 sts, then with the yarn behind slip the last 3 sts purlwise from left to right needle. Turn.

Row 2: (WS): with yarn behind, knit all the stitches until the last 3. With yarn in front, slip the last 3 sts purlwise from left to right needle. Turn.

Repeat these two rows 4x each. Total 8 rows.

Buttonhole

In 9th row, make buttonholes as follows:

p3, k3, {Hold the yarn in front of the work. Sl 1 purlwise. Move the yarn to the back of the work and leave it there. Slip another stitch to right needle purlwise and pass the first slipped stitch over the second slipped stitch (1st binded off). *Sl 1 purlwise. Slip the st you bind off over the one you just slipped (1st binded off)*. Repeat from * until you have binded off 5 sts.

Turn. Cast on 5 stitches using the Cable Cast On.

K8}

Repeat two more times everything between {}. At the last repetition, k3, with the yarn behind slip the last 3 sts purlwise from left to right needle.

Do 7 more rows as described earlier, starting from row 2 (WS). Total 16 rows from the beginning until now.
